چکیده

In this study a vowel identification task, controlling for intelligibility confounds, using audio visual stimuli at different signal to noise levels as well as visual only stimuli, is conducted to investigate neural processes involved with visual gesture information for speech perception. The fMRI results suggest that visual speech gesture information may serve to facilitate speech perception utilizing multiple distinct neural processes involved with multisensory integration (STG/S) and internal simulation of speech production (PMC).

Multisensory and modality specific processing of visual speech in different regions of the premotor cortex

Behavioral and neuroimaging studies have demonstrated that brain regions involved with speech production also support speech perception, especially under degraded conditions. The premotor cortex (PMC) has been shown to be active during both observation and execution of action ("Mirror System" properties), and may facilitate speech perception by mapping unimodal and multimodal sensory features o...

The multisensory perception of co-speech gestures – A review and meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies

Co-speech gestures constitute a unique form of multimodal communication because here the hand movements are temporally synchronized and semantically integrated with speech. Recent neuroimaging studies indicate that the perception of co-speech gestures might engage a core set of frontal, temporal, and parietal areas. However, no study has compared the neural processes during perception of differ...

Multisensory integration sites identified by perception of spatial wavelet filtered visual speech gesture information.

Perception of speech is improved when presentation of the audio signal is accompanied by concordant visual speech gesture information. This enhancement is most prevalent when the audio signal is degraded. One potential means by which the brain affords perceptual enhancement is thought to be through the integration of concordant information from multiple sensory channels in a common site of conv...

The brain uses single-trial multisensory memories to discriminate without awareness.

Multisensory experiences enhance perceptions and facilitate memory retrieval processes, even when only unisensory information is available for accessing such memories. Using fMRI, we identified human brain regions involved in discriminating visual stimuli according to past multisensory vs. unisensory experiences. Subjects performed a completely orthogonal task, discriminating repeated from init...

Links between Gestures and Multisensory Processing: Individual Differences Suggest a Compensation Mechanism

Speech-associated gestures represent an important communication modality. However, individual differences in the production and perception of gestures are not well understood so far. We hypothesized that the perception of multisensory action consequences might play a crucial role. Verbal communication involves continuous calibration of audio-visual information produced by the speakers. The effe...
